The Cavern Club Gig
On Saturday 19th September, 2009, Final Demand will be playing The Cavern Club in Liverpool. Yes – THE Cavern. The gig was booked back in 2008 and so it has always seemed some way ahead in the future. Now however, it’s less than 2 weeks away. Scroll down for more ........
Anyone who plays in a band of any type is odds-on to be a Beatle’s fan to some degree or another, and we’re certainly no different. With the iconic association The Cavern has with The Fab Four - then needless to say we’re starting to get pretty excited about playing down in the famous arches cellar club – or at least “some of it”.
What do we mean by “some of it” ? Well – we mean about 50% of it ……
Back in 1973, The alternate Dutch rock band “Focus” were the last to play the club in its original form. Very soon after that gig work began on completely filling-in the club to make way for the foundations for the construction of the Merseyrail underground loop.
However, by the mid 1980’s, Liverpool council and the Royal Life came to the somewhat belated conclusion that they had lost an iconic piece of modern cultural history and set about a plan to resurrect the club. In the meantime, a “false” Cavern Club had been created in another part of Matthew Street which pacified the casual tourists – but it could not replace the real thing.
They set about resurrecting (digging out) the original Cavern site, but as it formed the foundations for the underground loop it was only possible to excavate 50% of the original site. However, 50% was better than 0% and plans were drawn up for the Cavern where the original room (now known as the front room) would be rotated 90 degrees and new space would be created to make up the 50% deficit. In addition to this, the excavation continued and a second larger room was also created which is now used for ticketed shows and private functions.
The club re-opened in 1991, and the owners still run the club today making them the longest running owners in the club’s history.
The front room of the club is the main tourist attraction, where people come to have their photograph taken on the famous Cavern stage set under the arches which have provided the iconic images of the Beatles in the early 1960’s, and which has the backdrop of all the names of the bands who have played there written on the back wall.
What will add to the occasion is the fact that so many of you that come along to watch Final Demand regularly will be making the pilgrimage up to Liverpool to share the experience with us.
We look forward to seeing you all up in Merseyside on 19th – and here’s to what should be a great weekend !
